Seeking to form objects of deeply natural occurrence, as if something found on the side of the road deep in the mountains, the forms are kept within the language of a hewn section of a log - with the subtle bulging and contortion of form as if it were emerging from the ground itself.
These works represent initial material and formal explorations into the boundaries between that which is an act of the hands and mind and that which is from nature. Volumes are constructed from hand-formed sheet metal, welded and ground to create the presence of a solid steel object, only revealing the paper-thin nature of the steel in the revealed seams running along the formed surfaces. The individuality of each stump, all unique in size and presence, gives each singular object its own spirit within the whole while the structural nature of the formed metal allows object to be sculpture, seat, and table, an open-ended vessel for human activity and a landscape for dialogue, reflection, and most importantly, rest.
